List/Group/Label
List/Group/Label is a form of mapping called semantic mapping. This learning strategy prompts students to increase their vocabulary and learn to organize and categorize words. It helps them to recognize relationships between words. This activity actively engages students and makes for a fun and interactive learning environment.
How to use list/group/label in a classroom setting:
1. Choose a main topic or concept from a reading selection.
2. List: Have students brainstorm and list all the words that they think relate to the chosen topic. Write the words on the board so the class can see them.
3. Group: Divide the class into groups, numbers of 3 or 4 students work the best. Have the students work within their group to join together or cluster the words brainstormed by the class into subcategories. As groups of words are formed by the students have them explain why they are placing them together in the same group, what makes those words associate with each other.
4. Label: Have the student come up with titles or labels for each of the groups of words they have formed. The label they give the group of words should relate to the reasoning they gave for grouping them together.
