Teaching Vocabulary Rating
Vocabulary knowledge rating is a strategy used before a lesson, activity or reading that is designed to determine a students prior knowledge of the terms that will be used in the upcoming curriculum. This strategy helps the instructor by giving them an idea of the words that most need to be covered before the lesson, activity or reading begins. This vocabulary building strategy helps to build word consciousness. Readers that are word conscious tend to have stronger vocabularies. There are studies that show this strategy is effective for students to monitor their own vocabulary growth.
